You may have heard of “search engine optimization” or SEO, and everyone seems to talk much about this new hot thing going on in the World Wide Web. You want to join in the conversation when you suddenly realized that, hey, wait a minute! Do you know something about this SEO? Unfortunately, you hardly have any idea!

SEO, or the search engine optimization, refers to the methods wherein a website is optimized in order to make its rank higher in various search engines such as Yahoo, Google, Bing and many more. According to online gurus, SEO is deemed as the “holy grail” when it comes to marketing online.

A number of people get confused about the methods used in SEO and that is understandable because not everyone has the access to the information about this thing. Online companies are in abundance offering SEO services and other related stuffs and most of these are seemingly similar that is why an online marketer gets all mixed up and confused.

Here are the steps to get the ball rolling in optimizing a website:

  1. Make sure that you do your research on the right keywords that most people search for using the search engines. In the sea of thousands and thousands of topics in a mountain of websites, the visitors and consumers will type some specific keywords to find the things that they need. For example, if a person is looking for tips to have a greener lawn, avoid using “green lawn” as your primary keyword. You may use “Lawn maintenance tips” or “Natural lawn care” to attract more visitors.
  2. After finding the right keywords, make sure to distribute the keywords properly. Designate your primary, secondary and even a tertiary keyword and use these accordingly in your title and in the text. Make it appear “naturally” and avoid being redundant. You may use the keywords few times all over your text but ensure that the thought of your content is cohesive.
  3. Do not forget to double check the placement of the keywords. You can search for tools online to help you analyze your text, such as the Textalyzer (http://textalyser.net/). You will just copy and paste your text into the “textalizer” and submit for analysis. Afterwards, it will send you the number of words, the percentages, the readability and other pieces of information. These will help you adjust your text to attain the desired percentage of the keywords.
  4. Edit your work. Good SEO work employs usage of correct spelling, grammar, punctuation and many other things that you have probably forgotten since these were so boring when your teacher discussed them way back.

    Google should find you

  5. Make sure to garner enough ratings and recommendations for your website. These will enable spiders of Google to crawl on your site and guide readers towards it. When you have good ratings from the readers, your website will surely appear on top of the list in search engine results. Now, who would not want that?
  6. Finally, never forget to update your website. Do this as often as possible. Site content is like bread that gets stale after some time, and people do not really want stale bread or article, so replenish your website at least every week with fresh content to keep them coming back.
